John Davenport

John Davenport RBSA

Girl in a Blue Hat

John is interested in the ‘landscape’ of the human face. He aims for a fairly literal representation of the sitter’s appearance and to create a lively, painterly image recording expression and character.

He breaks down this complicated task into numerous small steps following traditional methods, working quickly, preferably from life and usually painting in acrylic.

John uses photographs sparingly to finish a work, in particular for providing details of the sitter’s surroundings and to assess the accuracy of the portrait, procedures that involve image processing on the iPad.
