John Davenport RBSA

I am fascinated by the ‘landscape’ of the human face. I attempt a fairly literal representation of the sitter’s appearance and aim to create a lively, painterly image recording expression and character.

I break down this complex task into numerous small steps following a traditional sequence. I progress from the general to the particular, working vigorously and quickly, preferably from life. Photographs may be used to provide details of surroundings and to check accuracy.

I usually paint in acrylic, but may occasionally overpaint in oils. I have recently become more interested in working with pastels. Image processing on the computer is sometimes used for rapidly exploring pictorial options.
