Joan Sharma

I started sculpting over twenty years ago while still working as a lecturer at Matthew Boulton College. For many years sculpture was squashed into whatever time was available during weekends and holidays. Since retirement, a few years ago, I am able to spend several days a week carving in a covered area at the end of my garden and on Tuesdays with the Shapeshifters at Winterbourne Botanical Gardens.  I am a founder member of the Shapeshifters Sculpture Company and have exhibited with them in various exhibitions. I am also a Friend of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and have exhibited in several Friends and Open Exhibitions at the RBSA gallery.

My early work was in wood and I aimed to work accurately from clay model to produce realistic human forms. Over the years I have moved to working mainly in stone and have enjoyed becoming freer and increasingly abstract. I start with an initial idea and then develop this directly with the stone. I enjoy the process of using hand tools to shape the bulk and find the lines, smooth curves and rough surfaces that feel “right” for the material.
